Lennox Lewis has delivered a warning to Anthony Joshua.

‘AJ’ might find it helpful to pay attention to what he is told by the 53-year-old, given Lewis’ sustained dominance in heavyweight boxing for a little over five years – bar a small blip against Hasim Rahman, swiftly amended with a brutal one-two combination a few months later.

Lewis first captured the lineal heavyweight titles in 1998, and made seven successful defences of his crowns before hanging up the gloves in 2003.

Meanwhile, Joshua will be hoping his career is heading the same way.

However, (quoted by Boxing Scene) Lewis thinks he sees one major issue with the Watford-native’s approach at present:

Joshua can take his time. He’s champion now. He says he doesn’t want to fight Tyson Fury for a year or so.

He wants to go around making money. I think that’s going to be a downfall for him. He has to stay with it, he can’t be in the background.

If he wants to be champion, he has to act like a champion.

The 29-year-old has gone 22-0 thus far in his professional career, and can currently claim the WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight titles.

An April 13, 2019 date at Wembley is scheduled for Joshua, where the prize Matchroom Sport commodity will face an as-yet-unconfirmed opponent.

Many boxing fans are hoping that the 6 ft 6 in colossus will take on the winner of Tyson Fury’s December 1 clash with Deontay Wilder. Any contest between that victor and AJ would crown a new undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, but Joshua’s team have been deliberately coy in any negotiations to this point.

Wary of his fighter’s position, promoter Eddie Hearn is confident of selling out Wembley no matter who he might book to enter the ring, and is attempting to use that as leverage to bag more money for his man from pay-per-view sales.

An impasse, some might say.

Others, such as Lewis, are growing impatient with the Matchroom Sport stance, and are ready to see Anthony Joshua compete for the moniker of lineal champion.
