Frampton needs a ‘big’ name at Windsor Park
Carl Frampton wants a big name at Windsor Park in August, but, it won’t be IBF Featherweight Champion Josh Warrington.
Following Warrington’s win over Lee Selby at Elland Road on Saturday (19/05/2018), many were thinking the next logical step would be a fight with Frampton at Windsor Park.
However, it seems The Jackal will now try and bring WBC champion Gary Russell Jr to Belfast for a Summer mega fight.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Frampton made it clear that he needs an opponent soon, but, the 12 round brawl between Selby and Warrington has made it difficult.
I didn’t care who won – Lee Selby or Josh Warrington – but I was hoping for it to be a one-round blow out with no injuries and for him to be ready to go in August,
It probably doesn’t look like Josh is going to be ready – he’ll need some time to rest – but I’m fighting in August at Windsor Park.
Rusell Jr also had a grueling contest on Saturday night when he retained his featherweight title against Joseph Diaz by unanimous decision, but, injured his hand in the early rounds.
It is unlikely that Rusell Jr would be able to recover from his hand injury in three months.
Frampton’s coach, Jamie Moore believed that the ideal situation for Saturday night was a Selby win, but, dismissed Warrington as an opponent for August.
The scenario that I thought would happen would be if Selby won and then I felt he would have been quite happy to go to Windsor Park because he would already have been an established world champion and it wouldn’t have been a new thing,
I think Josh Warrington deserves to be able to enjoy the moment and enjoy his victory and then maybe further down the line…
Finding an opponent is going to be a struggle for promoter Frank Warren as he will need to find a reputable name which can attract over 20,000 fans to the stadium.
