Mikey Garcia makes history after defeating Sergey Lipinets
Mikey Garcia made history after a unanimous points victory over Russia’s Sergey Lipinets in Texas.
The 30-year-old is only the third fighter, along with Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, to win world titles at light-welterweight, lightweight, super-featherweight and featherweight.
Lipinets, 28, was shocked after being knocked to the canvas for the first time in his professional career by Garcia on the way to losing his IBF light-welterweight belt.
The Russian suffered an injury during the build up to the fight which forced the initial fight date to be pushed back, and he put his defeat down to his inexperience in what was only his 14th bout to date.
Garcia has remained unbeaten, winning all of his 38 fights to date, adding the light-welterweight title to belts won at 126, 130 and 135 pounds.
Talking after his historic fight, Garcia said:
It’s a great feeling, it means a little chapter with my name. Getting to be mentioned with the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez is a huge accomplishment and a huge honour for me.
