Golovkin hits out at Team Canelo over banned substance use
Gennady Golovkin has hit out at Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and his team over the consumption of the banned substance clenbuterol, which they say was purely accidental, according to a report on the Boxing Scene.
Golovkin had feared that his eagerly anticipated rematch with Canelo would be cancelled after it was found that the Mexican had traces of the performance-enhancing substance in his body.
However, the fight is still scheduled to take place on 5th May at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which was the venue for the first matchup between the two fighters.
The first bout was scored as a draw by the judges, but IBF, IBO, WBA and WBC middleweight champion Golovkin felt that he was robbed of a victory.
Canelo and his team claim that the substance is only present because of food contamination, but Golovkin believes that they need to be more aware of what their fighter consumes.
He said:
The commission told us that he tested positive and it’s very bad, but I think it’s not a meat problem, it’s not just his problem, it’s a problem of his whole team.
If they are professionals they must understand and know what they eat, his position, it is not a problem of the meat. He looks very bad right now, many people see him as something negative for the sport, it is a problem of his team.
I think Canelo is a very good athlete, a good boxer, who does not need medicine or drugs, for me it is terrible and for all athletes who respect sport, clean sport, this is not good.
Golovkin will be looking to secure the victory for good in the second meeting by aiming to knock out Canelo, but the Mexican has plans of his own to floor his hard-punching rival.
