The latest stop on the Mayweather vs McGregor promotional tour took the duo, and their entourages, to New York City. However, the general consensus was that this event was a bit of a let down. Let’s take a look at what happened.
Late arrivals
The New York crowd were pretty restless as the event got underway and understandably so as the fighter’s late arrivals meant the start time was delayed by two hours.
Conor's image change
After wearing a suit in LA and Toronto, McGregor mixed things up by coming out in a white mink coat, with a huge picture of a snake on the back. He also wore some very distinct trousers and decided that a shirt wasn’t needed!
Rap references
McGregor began rapping to the Notorious BIG, the man he shares a nickname with. He then calls rapper 50 Cent a *****, which was odd, before turning to Floyd and telling him he’ll soon be broke. Conor then pulled out Jay Z’s album and gave it to Floyd. He told to listen to it to learn how to build a real empire.
Racism Row
After telling Mayweather to “dance for me, boy” in Toronto, a lot of commentators called McGregor’s comments racist. Addressing the issue, the Irishman made another ill-advised comment:”A lot of media seem to be saying I’m against black people. That’s absolutely ridiculous. Do they not know I’m half-black? I’m half-black from the belly button down.”
Bigger shoes Floyd?
In previous head-to-heads, Mayweather looked shorter than his opponent. However in New York, he wore trainers with huge boosted soles to take him up to the McGregor’s height!
Flag fury
Mayweather came onto the stage with an Irish flag draped over his shoulders, which didn’t go down too well with those in attendance!
Make it rain
Mayweather then threw money at McGregor. When the Irishman laughed, saying the notes were only one dollar bills, Mayweather said that’s because that’s all Conor is worth.
Form Voltron
One odd moment that stands out was when Mayweather told his ‘money team’ to “form voltron”, prompting them to surround McGregor and get in his face!
Head to Head
The event once again ended with a head-to-head. This time it was Mayweather who gave some trash talk as McGregor smiled and chewed his gum.
