WBA sanction title fight between Joshua and Klitschko
The World Boxing Association (WBA) have given the green light for a ‘super’ heavyweight title showdown between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko – provided the Brit beats Eric Molina in December.
The fight will take place in the Spring of next year, and will most likely be hosted by Wembley or the Millennium Stadium, which has a retractable roof.
Klitschko has finally been given the UK title fight he has be waiting for, after having his rematch with Tyson Fury postponed and then cancelled by the ‘Gypsy King’ who dethroned him of his titles last year, before having to postpone a potential December showdown with Joshua because of delays in the WBA’s decision to sanction the fight.
Klitschko’s manager, Bernd Boente, told ESPN of their excitement that the fight can now be confirmed:
“Team Klitschko is very happy about this WBA resolution. Wladimir always was a proud and committed WBA ‘super’ champion and now he wants to regain his title.”
Eddie Hearn, AJ’s promoter, confirmed to Sky Sports that a deal is in place for the vacant title fight and will now be in contact with Team Klitschko to discuss the fine details of the mouthwatering clash:
“It was beautiful to finally see the WBA’s decision last night finally allowing the Joshua v Klitschko fight for the spring. The deal is in place and we can now move forward with Bernd and their team to start confirming dates and venues.”
The deal is, however, dependent on Joshua, 17-0-0-17, defeating Eric Molina on December 10, and Hearn was keen to stress the importance of his fighter doing just that:
“The only thing in AJ’s way is Eric Molina and the full focus must be on the toughest fight of his career on December 10 in Manchester.” Before adding, “Wladimir will be ringside with his fingers crossed and victory for AJ will set up this mega fight in March/April 2017.”
