Gennady Golovkin vs Kell Brook Review
Gennady Golovkin retained his IBF, WBC and IBO world middleweight titles last night (10/09/2016) beating Kell Brook after a stoppage in the fifth round.
In a fight where Kell Brook was the huge underdog, stepping up from welterweight to face the number pound-for-pound fighter, Brook was able to hold his head up high despite the loss.
With a sell-out crowd at the O2 Arena, the majority of the crowd was behind the Sheffield fighter, there was a glimmer of hope that Kell Brook could do the impossible.
The first round was one to forget for Brook as Golovkin established his power early on, landing shots frequently and it looked like it could be an embarrassing night for Brook.
The nerves were put at bay however in the second round as Brook hit Golovkin with an uppercut and some menacing shots which managed to break the tight guard from Golovkin.
Throughout the third round, a lump began to appear under Brook’s right eye, but, this did not phase him as he managed to pull off some impressive combinations.
The fourth round was one in which Golovkin began to do some serious damage as he was able to hit Brook multiple times, but, in order to hit Brook, the champion had to take a few shots from Brook as well.
The fifth round was one where Brook experienced a barrage from Golovkin who looked angry and with the situation getting worse for Brook, his coach, Dominic Ingle, threw in the towel with a concern for Brook’s health.
Despite, boos from the fans inside the arena, Brook had broken his eye socket and if he carried on, there was the possibility of permanent sight loss.
However, Brook coped well at middleweight, but, boxing experts believe it was a step too far, but, would be interested in seeing him fight at light middleweight.
After the fight, Golovkin said he wants to unify the titles and that will mean a fight against WBO champion, Billy Joe Saunders who is yet to make the first defence of his title.
Chris Eubank Jr also called out Golovkin on Twitter after failing to agree a deal due to Chris Eubank Sr wanting to impose certain conditions on the fight.
