Golovkin camp reject claims that they are avoiding Ward
Abel Sanchez, the trainer of middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has laughed off the speculation that his camp are avoiding a potential super fight with super middleweight supremo Andre Ward.
Golovkin is preparing to face Kel Brook at middleweight whilst Ward has moved up to Light Heavyweight to take on Alexander Brand, which means the pair are further away from any potential fight.
Golovkin is the heavy favourite to beat Brook and Ward is tipped to win his fight too, so the pair could remain undefeated if they finally meet. You can keep up to date with the prices of both fighters winning their next clashes by keeping an eye on the odds and live boxing results at William Hill.
As reported by Boxing Scene, Sanchez says that, contrary to the comments made by Ward’s promoters, a fight between the pair was not turned down by Team Golovkin as they never even entered negotiations.
He said:
[The fight] has to be negotiated for it to be a fact [that we didn’t want Ward]. It’s not a fact that we didn’t want to fight him. We wanted to fight him. I think that’s a great fight. I think that’s a fight that will happen eventually, but I think that it has to be understood that there’s two parties [needed to negotiate] and there’s not just Andre Ward.
Sanchez also said that Golovkin would be happy to move up and fight at super middleweight in the future, which is the class in which any fight with Ward would surely have to take place at.
We are willing to move up to fight, meaning that if there’s no fight at 160, and there’s a fight that makes sense at 168, then absolutely [we will take it].
