Ricky Burns becomes a three weight world champion
Ricky Burns has become a three weight world champion after beating Michele Di Rocco in Glasgow.
In what was a dominating performance from Burns, an eighth round stoppage was enough to win the WBA super-lightweight title.
Di Rocco started off the bout in an aggressive manner, but, this proved costly as he walked straight into a stiff jab from Burns which proved to the major downfall for Di Rocco.
Di Rocco went straight onto the campus at the end of the third after a devastating right hand and was saved by the bell.
Di Rocco then was constantly supporting himself on the ropes and it was clear that the end was nigh for the Italian.
By the eighth round, Di Rocco’s time was up as Burns knocked his opponent down for a second time with a devastating right hand.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the fight, Burns was shocked by how easy the fight was.
Everything we worked on in the gym was working. [Trainer Tony Sims] couldn’t believe how easy it was. Thanks to all my team and everyone for coming down here. I just can’t believe it, honestly.
Burns has become the third British fighter to be a three weight world champion with Bob Fitzsimmons and Duke McKenzie also achieveing the feat.
